As part of my training at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy that I graduated from in 1994, my classmates and I sailed from mainland Portugal to Madeira Island, to Bermuda and then to New London Connecticut. I learned so much on this trip about seamanship, teamwork, and the beauty and danger of the sea. I am very fortunate to have experienced this once in a lifetime event and I cherish it always.
